Laminate Flooring in Water-Prone Areas – What to Know

Some types of floor coverings such as ceramic, luxury vinyl plank, and sheet vinyl flooring are waterproof and water-resistant. On the other hand, some are particularly vulnerable to moisture and water. These include solid hardwood, bamboo, engineered wood, as well as laminate floors.

It is for this reason that laminate flooring must be installed according to manufacturer instructions. Those which are expertly installed have a chance of repelling water and preserving its trendy look.

What Happens When Laminate Floors Get Wet?

Prolonged exposure to water can cause irreparable damage to laminate floorboards. After about four hours of being submerged underwater, those with open edges will begin to soak up the water. When this happens, the boards will start to swell by a couple of inches.

It will take you more than two days to fully dry these boards as they are often made of high-density fibreboard. However, take note that even after drying them, they will never return to their original dimensions.

What is the Best Way to Install Laminate Floors in Water-prone Areas?

Your bathrooms and kitchens are areas in your home where excessive moisture is present. If you prefer to have laminate floorboards for these spaces, you must follow certain steps to preserve their quality and extend their lifespan.

First, you must fold the underlayment up against the walls by at least two inches. This helps ensure that liquids spilt on the surface do not reach the subfloor. You may simply cut the excess underlayment after installing the boards with a utility knife.

Additionally, don’t forget to fill the laminate’s perimeter zone. These are necessary spaces around your boards that allow for the expansion and contraction of your flooring and walls. Silicone caulk is the best material for filling these expansion areas, especially for flooring that you expect to get wet frequently.

What Happens When You Spill Water on Top of Your Laminate Flooring?

Water on top of this flooring will not cause significant problems, but you will have to mop it up quickly. Doing so helps avoid it from easily flowing into the seams, which is what can cause issues.

For spills and other liquids on the edge areas of your laminate boards, you will need to use a wet-dry vacuum to thoroughly extract the water.

What Should You Do If Water Reaches Under Laminate Flooring?

If you suspect that water has seeped under your flooring, you need to remove the boards immediately. For water that is not pervading, you may use a wet-dry vacuum as mentioned above. However, to remove all liquids effectively, removing the affected floorboards is your best bet. Start with the soaked boards and unfasten those parallel to them; go as far as you need to.

This will allow you to clearly see the space affected by water and remove excess moisture effectively.

Laminate floorboards have water-resistant properties. However, they have a fibreboard core made of wood fibres that can be particularly vulnerable to water. Liquids on the surface of your flooring will not cause any significant problems, but you must be wary of any moisture passing through the seams and reaching the core.

On top of this, you also need to be careful and meticulous when it comes to installing this type of flooring in the damp areas in your home. As long as you follow the manufacturer’s instructions, you’ll surely transform any room into a beautiful and functional space.
